Introduction to Baby Boomer Finances

Baby boomers are formidible demographic, but one which marketers often ignore. Many people who are categorized as “boomers” have disposable income. The number of boomers retiring is staggering.

But the world as we knew it is changing. People are working longer and starting new businesses. Boomers are turning the traditional path of retirement on its head.

Of course, there are challenges for boomers, perhaps the biggest is ageism. Companies don’t want to hang onto this demographic. The stigma is that these old dogs won’t learn new tricks, and they often cost more than their younger counterparts.

Companies, though, are missing the bigger picture. Boomers worked hard and accumulated a lifetime of knowledge. A good portion of the knowledge was developed without the help of the internet, too. They just think differently than the lifetime connected young people. Neither is right or wrong, it just is what it is.

Boomers also face the challenge of not having enough money when they retire. Plenty of boomers started businesses that may not have blossomed as big as they had hoped. There were also big hits to their savings on multiple occasions and likely caused job losses that took longer than usual to recover. The dot com meltdown and the mortgage crisis are two such examples.

While these events affected everyone, boomers were harder hit because of their age. Someone in their 20s can easily recover from a hit to savings. Someone in who is 45 years’ of age or greater will have a tougher time making it back.

I created this website as I am a boomer. Interestingly, I am considered a shadow boomer as I am on the tail end of the baby boomer era. My perspective may be a bit different than many of the boomers who are already retired. Nonetheless, let’s consider my contribution of this website as the beginning of the end or the closing out of an era.

You don’t have to be a boomer to find useful information on this website. However, the information will be predominently geared towards this age group and I make no apologies for this. Of course, the title of the website creates doubt that you’d be here unless you were in the boomer demographic. Alas, everyone is welcome. Understand it will have a unapologetic leaning towards the baby boomer generation.
